Syllabus:

The rise of Islamic states. The structure of the bureaucracy in Indonesia 1600-1900. Political and economic penetration of the West into Indonesia. Social movements in the 19th century. The modern transformation and the growth of Indonesian consciousness:the nationalist movement. The national revolution; guided democracy and its aftermath. The New Order Government and its problems, plus a major research paper.
