Syllabus:

Major features of secondary schools. Theoretical and practice - upper and lower secondary classroom management, teaching strategies and major or minor curriculum programming. Knowledge and skills of management and teaching for lower and upper secondary in a major curriculum area. Preparation, implementation and evaluation of units of work. Communication and relational skills for seondary schools setting.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have- Practised classroom management, teaching strategies, lesson planning and evaluation procedures. examined and implemented curricula appropriate to the needs of students in a secondary school. Demonstrated an ability to take responsibility for a teaching program of gradual and increased complexity, incorporating student-centred teaching and learning processes that are appropriate in a variety of learning environments. Observed how the theory of teaching and learning is reflected in classroom practice. Worked collaboratively in a team. Selected and used appropriate interpersonal skills and strategies in a range of educational settings. Demonstrated positive attitudes and values regarding teaching, learning and assessment processes.

Unit Assessment Breakdown:

This unit is a pass/fail grade. At the conclusion of the four-week field experience, the University supervisor and the co-operating teacher will each submit a written report. A pass in both reports is required to pass the unit. If only one report indicates that the student is competent, the student may be granted a supplementary practicum. If the student fails according to both reports, the practicum needs to be repeated at a different school arranged by the Field Experience Co-ordinator.
