Area:

School of Biomedical Science

Credits:

25.0

Contact Hours:

5.0

Lecture:

1 x 2 Hours Weekly

Tutorial:

1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Practical:

1 x 2 Hours Weekly

Prerequisite(s):

307699 (v.1) Microbiology 331

Syllabus:

Details the molecular biology and pathogenesis of major microbial pathogens and how molecular biotechnology uses this information to improve diagnosis, treatment, epidemiological analysis, control and prevention of infectious diseases. Action and range of antimicrobial agents. Bacterial genetics and the evolution of resistance to antimicrobial agents, mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents and the spread and epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance genes.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have presented an informative seminar in a professional manner using modern communication software. Conducted, analysed, and understood laboratory exercises using cutting edge tools of molecular biology. Gained an understamding of the molecular pathogenesis of bacterial diseases and recognised the opportunities for developing diagnostic and epidemiological tools and methods of treatment prevention. Gained an understanding of the major issues confrontingthe use of antimicrobial agents, the emergence of resistant pathogens and the opportunities and strategies for developing novel approaches to antimicrobial chemotherapy.
