Syllabus:

Discipline of programming. Algorithms. Top-down design. ANSI C programming Language - I/O, variables, types, constants, expressions, decision making, arrays, functions, parameters, pointers, structures, files, dynamic memory allocation, Linked Lists, recursion, command line arguments. The design of large systems. Software design lifecycle.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have gained an understanding of the role of software in a computer system, the importance and concepts of top-down design, the application of basic numerical methods to solving engineering problems and the role of implementation in the larger software lifecycle. They will have gained competence in implementing an algorithm to a computer program and will be able to write programs of simple to intermediate complexity using the ANSI standard version of the C programming language. Finally, they will gain an awareness of the importance of conforming to standards in order to achieve software portability, the importance of adopting a programming style that emphasises clarity, testability and maintainability and the distictions between software engineering and programming skill.
