Syllabus:

Welfare economics theory is introduced. Measuring health, quality, adjusted life years (QALYs), willingness to pay and the valuation of human life are analysed. Cost effectiveness analysis, cost utility analysis and cost benefit analysis are examined. Distributional concerns in using these techniques are addressed. Examples of economic evaluation in practice are presented.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Interpreted the theoretical background to economic evaluation. Applied and contrasted the techniques of cost effectiveness, cost utility and cost benefit analysis. Formulated arguments for when to use which technique. Critiqued articles using economic evaluation.
