Syllabus:

Role and training of dietitians, professionalism and ethics. Conducting diet histories. Communication skills - nutrition counselling and interviewing, oral presentations, documentation of nutritional care and report writing. Organisation and management skills - problem solving and decision making, planning, managing resources and time management. Quality assurance. Fundamentals of private practice.
 

Unit Outcomes:

Upon completion of this unit students will have gained an understanding of - the role of the dietition in the Health Care Team and be familiar with the competencies required to be a dietitian, a knowledge and understanding of medical records and documentation of nutrition care and an ability to assess and identify client needs by analysing diet history and relevant socio-economic and medical information. Developed, implemented and evaluated appropriate nutritional care plans. Gained an ability to effectively interview and cousel patients, utilising appropriate skills and counselling techniques and to have developed a nutrition education program.

Unit Assessment Breakdown:

Education Presentation 5%. Diet History Assignment 15%. Education Session 20%. Practical Skills Examination 30%. Final Examination 30%. (To gain an overall pass in this unit, a satisfactory pass mark of 65% is required for both the theory and practical skills examinations. A satisfactory pass (65%) is also required in the practical skills examination before being permitted to undertake Dietetic Placement 482.) This is by grade/mark assessment.
