Syllabus:

The philosophy of evidence based practice is examined in detail with examples from sources such as the PEDRO and Cochrane Collaboration databases. Necessary practical skills are developed in identifying, acquiring, evaluating and using evidence. Clinical decision making skills are developed through the appropriate use of statistical analysis which includes examination of various forms of statistical testing. Case presentation are used to integrate student learning.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Discussed the importance of research to the ongoing development of physiotherapy practice. Further developed the skills necessary to access and search the literature using on-line search techniques. Identified types of evidence available which is relevant to clinical practice. Identified and considered the value of the types of measurement used to answer clinical questions. Discussed the reliability and validity of clinical measurement and the methodologies required to establish it. Identified, collected, evaluated and presented relevant evidence from the clinical literature. Described the role of statistics in assisting clinical decision making. Tested hypotheses about differences and association. Interpreted statistical results in terms of clinical implications. Describe the limitation associated with using statistical outcomes to support clinical decision making.
