AND
302779 (v.1) Structural Engineering 261 or any previous version

Syllabus:

Introduction to Design - broad issues of design, design approach, problem solving, types of loads and load factors, limit states, codes of practice. Steel - introduction to steel design, tension members, compression members, flexural members, members carrying combined actions, connections and splices and base plates. Concrete - introduction to design of concrete structures, flexure theory and design of singly reinforced concrete beams, doubly reinforced concrete beams, T beams, continuous beams, shear and torsion, bond and anchorage, serviceability and deformations, and detailing.

Unit Outcomes:

On the completion of the unit, the student will have an understanding of the basic concepts of structural design and acquire the ability to design simple steel elements and reinforced concrete structural members including connections. Familiarity with the relevant material codes will also be achieved.
