Area:

School of Biomedical Science

Credits:

25.0

Contact Hours:

5.0

Lecture:

2 x 1 Hours Weekly

Practical:

1 x 3 Hours Weekly

Syllabus:

The overall objective of the unit is to introduce molecular biology; the study of living systems and their functioning at the molecular level. Structure and function of DNA, transcription, translation and replication. Mutation and repair of DNA. Gene organisation and expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Genetic basis of disease and cancer.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit the student will have - Demonstrated an understanding of the structure, organisation, maintenance and transmission of genetic information in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Provided an insight into the mechanisms of regulating the expression of genetic information. Described how the genetic information is decoded and translated into the amino acid sequence of proteins. Demonstrated an insight into how molecular biology is revolutionising our understanding and treatment of genetic and infectious diseases. Had hands on experience in molecular genetics.
