Syllabus: | Normal metabolism, hormonal homeostasis, cellular respiration. Aetiology and epidemiology. Pathophysiology, diagnosis, classifications and monitoring. Pharmacotherapeutics. Acute complications and clinical management. Principles of client education and empowerment in a multicultural context. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Compared the aetiological and epidemiological characteristics of types of diabetes mellitus and determined its influence on society. Related the principles of the pathophysiological processes to client's illness. Demonstrated competence in the management of newly diagnosed diabetic clients. Evaluated the literature to determine best practice clinical management of diabetes and the associated acute complications. Analysed client variables and bestpractice recommendations to determine on-going client care including self-management and treatment modalities. Assessed client's educational needs and apply the principles of teaching and learning to the preparation and delivery of educational programs to optimise self-management of the disease. |
