Syllabus:

Further exploration of the mathematics learning area. Diagnosis and assessment of mathematical processes. Identifying and remediating mathematical learning problems. Designing appropriate learning experiences for teaching mathematics within the Western Australian Curriculum Framework. Outcomes focused education in mathematics.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Developed a more sophisticated insight into teaching and learning mathematics in the modern primary or early childhood classroom. An awareness of and the ability to analyse critically a variety of materials and activities which promote mathematical understanding. An awareness of planning for short and long term objectives for mathematics learning. A familiarity with the format and use of the Western Australian mathematics syllabus, student outcome statements and curriculum frameworks to inform teaching and learning. The ability to develop appropriate activities for children in mathematical learning. Revised and consolidated aspects of their own mathematical knowledge. A range of teaching strategies and techniques to employ and the ability to use them in appropriate situations. Developed an understanding of the issues associated with mathematics and its teaching. Begun to integrate the working mathematically strand of the student outcome statements into their teaching.
