Syllabus:

Cognitive development, Piaget, Vygotsky, information processing, concepts, language, memory. Genetics and intelligence- Psychometric and Sternbergian views. Effect of the environment on the early development. Dealing with the psychosocial stages of Kohlberg to promote positive resolutions, Freud's id, ego and superego, defence mechanisms and personality development. Moral development from Piaget and Kohlberg's theories. Social development, attachment, play, peers, family, parenting styles. Psychosocial development- Erikson. Emotional development, empathy and regulation, fear, anger, sadness, aggression, self-consciousness, temperament. Physical and motor development.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Identified and explained the key terms and concepts in the areas of human development. Described links between human development and educational outcomes and contexts. Analysed data to demonstrate an understanding of cognitive, moral, social, emotional, psychosocial and pyhsical development. Applied developmental theory to construct and interpret a variety of contexts. Conceptualised individual differences and their relationship to educational contexts.
