Syllabus: | This unit draws on material covered in BS 171, particularly social constructionism, postmodernism and culture as they relate to physical health-illness, mental health-illness and ability-disability continuums. Emphasis is placed on the student achieving a critical understanding of the dynamic interplay and relationships between the various perspectives covered in the unit. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have- The ability to demonstrate and apply knowledge that forms the basis of understanding and responding to physical health-illness, mental health-illness and ability-disability. Able to demonstrate anunderstanding of the key stakeholders, conceptual frameworks, legislation and policies that have been developed in the relevant areas. Critically analyse normative and historical discourses in physical health-illness, mental health-illness and ability-disability fields. Articulate and critically assess the broad range of roles Social Workers and other human service professionals undertake in this field. Critically examine personal values and the role of theory in working with physical health-illness, mental health-illness and ability-disability. |
