Syllabus:

Sociology of the arts, the arts in Australia, artistic activity and social structure, 'Artsworlds' and collective activity, artistic conventions, sociology of art perception, artistic and general ideologies, art schools and art debates in Australia, connections between the material and social conditions of art production and the work of art.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have - Understood the major approaches to the sociological study of the arts and culture. Viewed art as a social product. A clear understanding of the role of arts in contemporary economy and society, and of the development of arts and culture as industries. Analyised the changing relationship between the arts and the state. Related the sociological analysis of the arts to wider concerns in sociological theory and analysis.
