Syllabus:

Health record structures in hospitals and primary health facilities. Retention, storage and retrieval of information. Alternate storage media. Introduction to electronic health records. Hospital and community health field trips.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have - defined the components of health records in hospitals, community health centres and general practice. Explained how the patient's association with the health care facility is documented and how it is linked with episodes of care. Demonstrated an understanding of factors influencing the retention, storage and retrieval of records. Explained the technical aspects of alternate storage media together with the management implications of their usage in health information systems. Become familiar with medical dictation systems and associated management considerations. Gained insight into current health issues by attending field trips to a variety of facilities.
