Syllabus:

Examines current Australian heritage management in context of the history and development of ideas of cultural heritage, the ideology and effect of conservation movements, and the Burra Charter philosophy. Cultural significance is explored with reference to changing community values, ideas of authenticity, socially and politically contested heritage, legal regimes, tourism, access and interpretation.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Understood how the identification and management of cultural heritage sites embodies and develops the social construction of heritage values. Appreciated current issues relating to cultural heritage management. Recognised the implications of managerial and curatorial functions in preserving and presenting cultural heritage sites. An understanding of the bases of managerial and curatorial practice.
