Syllabus:

The concept of automata as an abstraction of computer structures. Application of automata in software and hardware design within computer structures. The concepts of architecture and organisation. Core elements of modern computer structures. Assessing performance and the factors that influence it.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will gain an understanding of the scope of computer structures, how they are evolving at both hardware and software levels and the directions of that evolution. They will obtain knowledge of the various architectural levels within a computing structure and the interactions between them and the basic concepts of communicating sequential processes and how these ideas influence systems software and hardware design. They will also learn of the process of abstraction in computing and how that process is applied as well as the structure and function of the core elements from which a computing structure is created. In terms of skill, students will learn to understand and appreciate design specifications for computing structures and to be able to frame a core set of specifications for a common system, they will be able to make reasoned judgements on the high level design of computing structures and undertake a basic level of such design and they will be able to program in the java language at a moderately high level, and through that gain an ability to learn other object oriented languages.
