Syllabus:

Economic roles of the state, the size and growth of government, public and private sector comparative efficiency, privatisation, principles of taxation, tax incidence, optimal taxation theory and taxation reform, taxation and economic growth and development, intergovernmental financial relations, theory and practice.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have gained an understanding of the roles of the public sector in a market economy and the effects on the private sector of government taxation and expenditure decisions. Specifically, they will be able to demonstrate that they are familiar with the literature in several important areas of public finance. They will understand the effects of government taxing and spending decisions on the private sector. They can critically analyse public sector economic policy issues. That they are familiar with and can access national and international public sector financial statistics.
