Syllabus:

Factors controlling ground behaviour in underground mines. Excavation geometry and stability. The strength of jointed rockmasses. Strength versus stress in fractured rockmass. Overall mine sequencing strategies. The effects of blasting on stability. Determination of pillar strength and pillar design. Empirical stope design. Design validation and dilution control.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Identify factors controlling ground behaviour in underground mines. Understand excavation geometry and stability. Analyse the strength of jointed rock masses. Analyse strength versus stressin fractured rock masses. Design overall mine sequencing strategies. Understand the effects of blasting on stability. Determine pillar strength and undertake pillar design. Undertake empirical stope design. Understand dilution control.
