9768 (v.7) Geology 207 - Structural Geology

Area:Department of Applied Geology
Credits:25.0
Contact Hours:5.0
Lecture:3 x 1 Hours Weekly
Laboratory:1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Prerequisite(s):7032 (v.5) Geology 102 or any previous version
Syllabus:Description, classification and relationships between folds, foliations and lineations. Stress and relationship to fracturing and faulting. Nomenclature of faults, displacements and fault separations. Pure and simple shear, progressive deformation and particle paths both two and three dimensional. Quantitative strain analysis. Shear zones and kinematic indicators. Superimposed folding. Folding mechanisms and fold development. Mechanical properties of rocks. Deformation mechanisms and microstructures. Use of stereographic projection in interpretation of structures.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Demonstrate knowledge of the nomenclature of large and small scale structures. Develop an appreciation of the nature of stress, strain and the mechanical properties of rocks at a range of scales. Think in three dimensions. Portray 3D structures in 2D and interpret the 2D representation of a 3D structure. Analyse natural structures at a range of scales and the deformations that produced them. Critically analyse structural data and relate it to tectonic studies.
