Syllabus:Biomechanics and orthoses - Normal and abnormal foot mechanics. Compensation in frontal, transverse and sagittal planes. Methods and validity of measurement. Mobile and rigid foot types. Introduction to computerised gait analysis. Casting techniques and manufacture of functional orthoses. Medical Imaging - Dangers of radiation, equipment used, radiographic projections, interpretation of x-rays and reports relevant to podiatry.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - An understanding of the principles of foot compensation for pathological states. An ability to recognise and diagnose common foot disorders of mechanical origin. An understanding of various methods of measuring joint movements relevant to podiatry. A knowledge of the principles of mechanical therapy. An understanding of the role of orthoses in correcting, maintaining or improving foot function. The ability to fabricate a range of orthotic devicesfrom a variety of materials. An appreciation of safety and protection in relation to radiation and imaging techniques. An understanding of the physics of medical imaging. A knowledge of radiographic techniques and positions of concern to the podiatrist. An understanding of the interpretation of radiographic plates. An understanding of radiology reports.
