Area:Department of Applied Chemistry
Credits:25.0
Contact Hours:6.5
Tutorial:1 x 1.5 Hours Weekly
Laboratory:1 x 5 Hours Weekly
Prerequisite(s):    13386 (v.3) Analytical Chemistry 114 or any previous version
    OR
7042 (v.6) Analytical Chemistry 112 or any previous version
Syllabus:Detailed treatment of sampling procedures, sample decomposition, gravimetric and titrimetric methods as applied to the analysis of real samples of geochemical or metallurgical origin. Sample preparation and decomposition, separation techniques including precipitation phenomena, chromatography, solvent extraction, volatilisation, masking, determination of required species by titrimetric or instrumental methods. Theory and practice of flame atomic absorption spectrometry.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit the student will have gained a sound knowledge of the concepts of analytical chemistry and the associated practical skills to undertake laboratory work at the professional level, with particular emphasis on atomic absorption spectrometry. They will have demonstrated mastery in performing accurate analyses on a selection of geochemical ores and alloys and a sound working knowledge of the theory and operation of an atomic absorption spectrometer and have demonstrated competency in its use.
