Syllabus:Pharmacodynamics - Drugs acting at peripheral sites. Local hormones, inflammation and allergy. Antiplatelet and thrombolytic drugs. Immunosuppression. Drugs used to treat the epilepsies, neurodegenerative and behavioural disorders. Pharmacokinetics - Drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination. Induction and inhibition of metabolism. Pharmacogenetics. Renal drug filtration, secretion and reabsorption. Bioavailability.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have developed a knowledge of the mechanisms of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination. Demonstrated an appreciation of the relevance of this knowledge to Pharmacodynamics. Developed a clear and demonstrable understanding of pharmacodynamic principles. Developed the ability to apply these principles in describing the primary mechanisms of action of the classes of drugs included in the syllabus. Described and explained the mechanismsof common and less common but serious (life threatening) adverse effects and interactions for specific drugs and/or classes of drugs. Developed the ability to search appropriate scientific and medical literature sources in pharmacology and therapeutics and communicate findings in an appropriate form. Demonstrated an understanding of fundamental pharmacokinetic parameters and their application to drug dosage calculations based upon average serum steady state concentrations
