7909 (v.4) Physical Measurements 202

Area:Department of Applied Physics
Credits:25.0
Contact Hours:3.0
Laboratory:1 x 3 Hours Weekly
Prerequisite(s):7908 (v.4) Physical Measurements 201 or any previous version
Syllabus:Set experiments involving exercises in classical and modern physics. Proposed experiments are the Bifilar pendulum, the harmonic motion analyser, simple pendulum, Geiger counter, pulse height analysis I, water wave speed and seiching, ultrasound.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this units students will have developed an attitude of care and attention to detail in all matters relating to experimentation. They will have demonstrated competence in the measurement process by planning measurement sequences by allocating the necessary time to perform an appropriate number and type of measurements, selecting and using suitable equipment to make appropriate measurements, describing the procedures and processes used to perform the measurement, recording the data clearly and unambiguously with their assigned units, assigning realistic uncertainties and commenting on any irregularities in the execution of the measurement that could influence the result. They will be able to synthesize the observations in a waythat increases the understanding of the physics by plotting suitable graphs, comparing observations wtih theory and then commenting on the extent of the agreement in terms of precision and accuracy.
