Syllabus:Introduction to Information Technology and its application to Health Sciences. Information Literacy [sourcing information from libraries, books, journals and the Internet]. Critical appraisal of information. Use of information in oral presentations and in academic writing [citation, referencing]. Avoidance of plagiarism. Cross cultural communication including Indigenous Australians. Communication with people with disability. Communication in teams.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Develop library searching skills using information technology programs such as Curtin Library Catalogue, Gecko and the Internet. Obtain suitable journal articles, books and access websites in order to write a research paper. Develop effective writing strategies and write a research paper using appropriate citation techniques and a standardised referencing system such as Harvard, APA or Vancouver. Develop oral presentation skills and prepareand deliver an oral presentation using Power Point. Understand the basics of verbal and written communication and be able to list barriers to effective communication. Have a knowledge of the diversity and an understanding of multiculturalism especially as it relates to health professions in Australia. Develop skills in cross-cultural communication and communication with Aboriginal people (also, communication with people with disability). Develop skills in information technology such as - Microsoft Word, Excel, HealthWIZ and Endnote.
