Syllabus:An introduction to the principles of physical fitness, the physiological effects of activity and methods of assessment of fitness. An examination of the contribution of physical activity to the maintenance of health - the principles of, running, swimming, circuit training and the characteristics of community and worksite activity programmes.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Discuss the principles of physical fitness, and its contribution to health. Describe the body's physiological responses to exercise. Discuss the factors which necessitate individualisation of physical fitness programmes. Develop a personal aerobic physical fitness programme. Describe characteristics of community and worksite exercise programmes. Describe and discuss the barriers to increasing exercise participation. Identify and evaluate community based strategies to increase physical activity. Conduct a fitness test. Understand the relationship between body composition and exercise. Develop a strength training programme.
