Area:Department of Applied Chemistry
Credits:25.0
Contact Hours:5.0
Lecture:2 x 1 Hours Weekly
Tutorial:1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Laboratory:1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Syllabus:Introduction. Alkanes and cycloalkanes. Alkenes. Alkynes. Benzene and aromatic compounds. Stereoisomers. Ideal gas laws. Thermodynamics. Chemical kinetics. Colligative properties. Experiments involving qualitative inorganic analysis, physical and organic chemistry.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to efficiently and accurately perform a range of laboratory procedures, they will appreciate the need for safe working practices in the laboratory, perform a range of mathematical calculations related to the manipulation and interpretation of data and be familiar with the language and terminology used in organic chemistry. They will demonstrate the knowledge to be able to identify the basic classes of hydrocarbons and predict the common reactions these will undergo, the laws governing the behaviour of gases, the laws of thermodynamics, the factors affecting the rates of reactions and apply these to solve simple problems and describe and apply the concepts associated with the colligative properties of solutions.
