Syllabus:Epidemiological research, association and causation, rates and ratios, standardisation, bias, confounding and sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests. Principles and evaluation of clinical trials, cohort and case control studies. Multivariate analyses - simple and multiple linear regression, 2 way ANOVA, ANCOVA, repeated measures and Kappa statistics. Use of SPSS software.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Apply epidemiological principles to their specific area of study within public health. Recognise and utilise appropriate epidemiological procedures according to study type. Critique and review epidemiological literature. Identify the range of problems to which epidemiology can be applied in public health. Use the SPSS software package to analyse epidemiologic data. Apply multivariate statistical modelling techniques.

Unit Assessment Breakdown: Internal Students - Mid-Semester Test 20%, Epidemiology Assignment 15%, Final Examination 50%, Computing Test 15%. External Students - Assignments 40%, Final Exam 60%. This is by grade/mark assessment.
