Syllabus:Drug use and dependence. The process of change. Theoretical models of intervention. Psychological pharmacological and self-help models of treatment and rehabilitation. Effectiveness of treatment. Working with significant others. Introduction to working with clients with comorbid drug and psychological problems. Applied skills development in relation to a number of treatment techniques.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will - Understand the nature of dependence and addiction. Have a basic understanding of the role of a range of factors in the development and maintenance of addiction behaviours. Be able to conduct an assessment interview with a client with a drug problem. Be able to conduct a motivational interview. Have knowledge of a range of drug treatments and their appropriate applications and effectiveness.
