5630 (v.7) WASM Engineering Metallurgy 561

Area:WASM Minerals Engineering and Extractive Metallurgy Teaching Area
Credits:25.0
Contact Hours:5.0
Lecture:1 x 4 Hours Weekly
Practical:1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Syllabus:Solidification of metals and alloys, phase diagrams, structure of alloys, heat treatment and properties of steels. Dislocations and plasticity of crystals, deformation of metals, heat treatment. Testing of metals, fatigue, creep, failure, joining of metals, corrosion. Wear mechanisms and selection of materials for ore handling and processing machinery.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Interpreted and used binary phase diagrams for the prediction of microstructures and resulting physical properties. Become aware of the effects of alloying on properties and surface treatments toincrease service life and reduce the risk of failure.
