Syllabus:The law and legal systems. Jurisdiction of State and Federal courts, operation of the doctrine of precedent. English and Australian law reports, digests, law reports of other common law jurisdictions. Primary and secondary legislation and statutory interpretation. Legal research methodology and legal writing skills.
 
Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit students will have- Awareness of the meaning of law and of legal systems. Advanced understanding of the operation of the Australian legal system. Enhanced knowledge of the operation of the doctrine of precedent and the principles of statutory interpretation. Critically understood principles relating to legal research methodology. Highly-developed skills in respect to traditional and electronic legal research methods. Highly developed skills of legal writing, including accurate citations. Undertaken and completed a high-level legal research project on a selected topic.
