Syllabus:Molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Molecular basis of disease. Recombinant DNA technology in medicine - cloning, sequencing and synthesis, gene probes as diagnostic reagents and DNA fingerprinting, polymerase chain reaction in clinical diagnostics, human pharmaceuticals - microbes, protein engineering, designer drugs, recombinant vaccines. Transgenics and gene therapy, social and legal aspects. Consists of five topics which examine techniques used in Biotechnology. The five topics are - enzymes, vectors and applications, southern blotting and applications, polymerase chain reaction and applications - genetic libraries, construction, use and identification of clones including sequencing and use of radioactive substances.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Demonstrated knowledge of basic molecular techniques used for nucleic acid based investigations. Appreciated and understood the safe use of radioactive substances in a laboratory environment. Performed a range of mathematical calculations related to the manipulation and interpretation of laboratory data. Demonstrated practical expertise with the performance of basic molecular techniques. Demonstrated competence in preparation of reagents for use in nucleic based applications. Demonstrated knowledge of the applications of the molecular techniques.
