Syllabus:Approaches to the discovery of drugs. Quantitative structure-activity relationships. Impurity profiles. Mechanisms by which drugs degrade. Introduction to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Prodrugs. Medicinal chemistry of selected drug groups. Analysis of drugs in therapeutic formulations and biological fluids. General principles of toxicology. Concepts of quality assurance.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Developed an understanding of the relationship between chemical structure and physico-chemical parameters of drug molecules and their biological activity. Developed an appreciation of the relationship between structure and chemical stability. Demonstrated a basic understanding of certain advanced analytical techniques. Developed a knowledge of the medicinal chemistry of certain drug groups. Demonstrated an understanding of the application of analytical techniques to the analysis of drug related compounds in medicaments and biological fluids. Demonstrated an understanding of the general principles of toxicology, the causes of toxicological manifestations and the scope and limitation of assessment procedures.
