| Syllabus: | Factors affecting the growth and development of farm animals are described. Selected topics include nutrition, reproduction and lactation, health and genetics. Introduction to inferential statistics and experimental design and analysis. |

| Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have - Explained the principles of protein and carbohydrate metabolism and describe the application of feeding standards. Explained the principles of feeding and the use of alternative feed sources. Determined the nutritive value of some common feed sources. Explained the physiological control of the reproductive cycle and discuss how reproduction can be manipulated to improve animal production. Described the application of existing and new technologiesto equine reproduction and growth. Conducted a breeding soundness examination of an animal. Designed a breeding program that incorporates the principles of genetic improvement. Described the indications for and effective use of different types of therapeutics. |
