Syllabus:Exercise testing, laboratory-based, field walking tests. Patient assessment using quality of life questionnaires. Exercise prescription, adherence and maintenance. Selection of evidence based outcome measures. Effect of depression and medications on exercise tolerance. Economic evaluation of pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Marketing pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Bladder and bowel dysfunction in people with lung disease.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Selected an appropriate exercise test(s) to assess exercise tolerance and prescribe exercise for individuals with chronic lung disease. Prescribed an exercise program for individuals with chronic lung disease using evidence based practice including strategies to encourage exercise adherence and maintenance. Appropriately modified an exercise program for a severely breathless patient, a patient who develops significant desaturation, an in-patientwith an acute exacerbation, an elderly individual, a patient with osteoporosis and a patient who is depressed. Evaluated the responses to a pulmonary rehabilitation program using appropriate outcome measures. Discussed the evidence for using airway clearance techniques for individuals with COPD. Understood the factors that give rise to bladder and bowel dysfunction in people with chronic lung disease and strategies for management. Implemented strategies to market a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
