Syllabus:Provides a basis for teaching English as a second language. Topics include - theories of language description, language acquisition and learning styles and approaches to and practical methods of language teaching. Listening, reading, writing and speaking, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Observations and microteaching opportunities will be available.
 
Unit Outcomes: On sucessful completion of this unit students will have - Shown awareness of learner's cultural differences and similarities. Evaluated materials in terms of suitability to learners. Provided their learners with strategies for learning English as a second language. Structured a classroom environment that maximises the learning potential of their learners. Demonstrated an understanding of the way the English language is described linguistically - its morphology, syntax, semantics and phonology. Shown an understanding of the way language is socially constructed. Analysed discourse for teaching purposes. Provided learners with meaningful practice in listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Identified the principles behind the main language syllabus types and incorporate these principles into lesson design.
