Syllabus:An overview of issues central to the theory and practice of human rights in international relations. Topics include - An introduction to the concept and development of rights, an overview of the content and mechanisms of international human rights regimes, and an examination of issues that demonstrate how human rights function within the context of international politics.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will - Understand the philosphical underpinnings of the concept of human rights and various critiques of this concept. Understand the potential tension between the protection of state sovereignty and the promotion of human rights. Understand the strengths and weaknesses of efforts to promote and protect international human rights by individuals, non-governmental organisations, states and international organisations.
