Syllabus:An exploration of how meanings are formed and circulated within a culture. Basic communication skills - proficiency in the use of the english language, including the correct use of punctuation, syntax, familiarity with various kinds of writing and with appropriate terminology. This unit is usually taken over three weeks during the summer period.
 
Unit Outcomes: To introduce students to broadened definitions of the concepts culture, text and reading. To explore with students the relationship of text, cultural context and reader. To introduce students to the key concepts of semiotics and representation. To develop students' capacities for critical reading and evaluation of researched material.
