Syllabus:Introduction to the basic principles of genetics with a molecular emphasis. Classical genetics - Mendelian patterns of inheritance and genetic crosses. Chromosomal basis of heredity - mitosis and meiosis, recombination, sex chromosomes and chromosome abnormalities. Chemical nature of the gene, genetic code, mutation and polymorphism. Molecular basis of inherited genetic diseases and cancer. Recombinant DNA technology in disease diagnosis.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Developed an awareness of the historical development of classical and molecular genetics. Developed an understanding of the principles and molecular basis of heredity, including the fidelity of transmission of genetic information and patterns of inheritance. Demonstrated an awareness of the interaction between genotype and phenotype and a comprehension of the genetic variation in natural populations and of the molecular basis of polymorphism and mutation. Developed a familiarity with the historical perspective and basic tenets of the Darwin-Wallace theory of evolution by natural selection. Developed the ability to compare and contrast the classical, balanced and natural theories of selection and a comprehension of the impact and consequences of genetics on society.
