Syllabus:Embryology. Development, eruption and exfoliation of teeth. Microscopic structure of the oral tissues. Saliva, salivary glands. Osteology, myology, angiology of the head and neck. Nervous system with emphasis on cranial nerves V, VII, IX and XII. Pain perception and methods of control. Local anaesthetics - pharmacology, techniques of administration, complications and contra-indications.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have - Demonstrated a general knowledge of the development and age changes in the orofacial tissues. Demonstrated an understanding of the clinical relevance of the microscopic structure and function ofthe orofacial tissues. Demonstrated a general knowledge of the normal anatomy of the head and neck. Demonstrated knowledge of the anatomy of orofacial structures associated with the administration of local anaesthesia. Demonstrated knowledge of the administration of local anaesthesia.
