Syllabus:Introduction to the wide area of communication in general, and academic and business communication in particular. Focuses upon the process of communication which includes skills in speaking and listening, various forms of writing such as reports, essays and organisational communication. Conflict management, group decision making and negotiation processes are also investigated in order to provide students with basic communication skills which are necessary in the workplace and in tertiary study.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have - Identified the major components of the communication process and analysed various methods of appropriate communication in the workplace. Distinguished between the changing modes of communicationin the workplace and applied them appropriately to their own situation. Recognise different strategies associated with spoken and unspoken communication. Analysed someone's non-verbal behaviour. Written an essay. Researched and evaluated written information. Identified the key components of different reporting styles. Written a report. Identified and analysed the key components of successful meetings and group dynamics. Used a problem solving strategy in a conflict situation. Demonstrated an understanding of the negotiation process. Explained the communication strategies involved in group decision making.
