Syllabus:

The concept of culture, contemporary indigenous cultures and local indigenous ways including communication practices, values, beliefs and attitudes. Indigenous identity, diversity and representation. Tensions between indigenous ways and community management, development and primary health care practices and skills for working in culturally appropriate and empowering ways. The conceptual framework of, and consultative practices associated with the development of Aboriginal terms of reference.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Outlined the implication of their own Indigenous identity, heritage and culture for their particular work. Identified and described key aspects of local Indigenous culture and ways. Explained thediversity and commonalities that exist in Indigenous cultures and the implications for own work. Explained Aboriginal Terms of Reference as a general framework for problem solving in specific situations. Described and analysed conflicts and compatibilities between Indigenous ways and community development, primary health care and community management values and practices.

Unit Assessment Breakdown:

Assessment on organisational communication, Practicum (message presentation), Short answer test. Students must obtain a 50% grade in each assessment unit to achieve a Pass grade. This is by Pass/Fail Assessment.
