Syllabus:Development of basic physiotherapy competencies in the management of selected neurological problems. Aspects of typical sensory and motor peripheral and central neural adult and paediatric disorders covered include - aetiology, pathology and clinical features, assessment, clinical decision making, treatment options and other management strategies.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Identified problems relevant to the client with neurological dysfunction. Discussed the neurological pathology, resultant disability and rehabilitation and medical management for each problem. Demonstrated the appropriate and effective physiotherapy assessment skills and set realistic short and long term goals in consultation with the client and caregivers. Discussed the evidence based physiotherapy management for each problem. Modified physiotherapy assessment and intervention for the individual recognising age, gender, associated medical conditions, cultural differences, other psychosocial factors and level of understanding. Monitored and evaluated the effectiveness of physiotherapy intervention. Considered the influence of occupational, social and environmental factors and their implications on the plan for intervention and implement safe and effective management strategies using evidence based practice. Demonstrated appropriate and effective communication skills with clients and caregivers. Demonstrated an understanding of the importance of the team approach to rehabilitation.
