Syllabus:Development of basic physiotherapy competencies in the management of peripheral musculoskeletal disorders. Aspects of typical acute and chronic peripheral joint and soft tissue disorders covered include - aetiology, pathology and clinical features, assessment, clinical decision making and management strategies including education, prevention, occupational health, manipulative therapy and soft tissue treatments.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Developed a method of clinical examination of patients with musculoskeletal disorders of the peripheral joints and related structures. Applied biomedical knowledge relating to anatomy, biomechanics and pathology into clinical practice to assist the diagnosis of common disorders which have relevance to musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice. Developed a process of obtaining and interpreting relevant information from patients and used this as a basis for the planning and implementation of of a logical process of physical examination. Had an introduction to the process of clinical decision making in relation to indications for treatment and treatment prescription based on the clinical examination findings. Applied common methods of physical treatment and related patient management including joint mobilisation, massage, muscle stretching and strengthening, therapeutic exercise and taping. Modified and progressed treatment based on continuous reassessment of treatment response. Identified intrinsic and extrinsic factors contributing to the development or perpetuation of the disorder and assisted patients to manage these factors independently.
