Lecture:1 x 4 Hours Weekly
Tutorial:1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Syllabus:Safety and productivity accounting. Access, layout and design. Unit operations and mine services. Coal mining - methods, methane drainage, subsidence, percentage extraction. Mining methods - cut and fill, shrinkage, longhole stoping, vertical crater retreat, sub level caving, block caving, hard rock narrow width tabular mining methods. Ground water control, backfill and dilution. Field trips.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Understand the relative merits of standard underground mining systems within a business framework so as to achieve a safe, profitable and productive outcome. Select an appropriate system and suitable equipment to suit a particular ore body. Develop an awareness of the geo mechanics of the structures and the need for the selection of appropriate rock support systems. Consider the requirements of the Mine Safety and Inspection Act and Regulations.
