Syllabus:Mining - history of metals and materials development. Mining terminology and technology. Mine planning, surveying, safety and environmental management and selection of mining method. Surface and underground mining. Mining and society. Metallurgy - introduction to metallurgy and mineral processing. Extraction of metals through mineral processing. Pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy. Other - technical report writing.
 
Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit students will have a thorough understanding of the contribution of mining to the national economy, classification of mining methods, mining equipment, technological processess of mining, occupational health and safety issues and the impact of mining on the environment. Knowledge of extraction of metals through mineral processing.
