Syllabus:Positive displacement pumps and rotodynamic pumps. Pumping system, pump performance. Economics of pumping. Impulse turbine and reaction turbines. Hydraulic modelling and similitude. Dimensional analysis. Open Channel flow, its classification and properties. Energy and momentum principles. Critical flow and uniform flow. Design of channels. Gradually varied flow, theory and computation. Rapidly varied flow. Hydraulic jump and its use as energy dissipator. Introduction to unsteady flow.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have attained an appreciation of the application of the principles of civil engineering hydraulics, particularly the principles relating to hydraulic machinery in the form of turbine and pumping systems. They will also achieve an appreciation of the application of the principles of civil engineering hydraulics, in particular to the principles relating to flow in open channels and gain an introduction to the principles of unsteady flow in channels.
