Syllabus:

Examination of the structure and function of the immune system. Cells and cellular products of significance in immunobiology. Antigens and immunogens. The structure and functions of immunoglobulins and antibodies, antigen-antibody reactions - principles and applications. The complement system. The major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Applied immunology, immunisation, organ transplantation, hypersensitivities and disorders of the immune system.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Define or explain various immunological terms and acronyms. Identify the organs of the immune system. Describe the interrelationships between the innate and adaptive immune systems. Describe the roles of the complement system. Describe the roles of the immune system in the body systems of the vertebrate. Understand the basis of antigen recognition by cell receptors. Possess an in depth understanding of the processes by which immune responses develop and manifest themselves. Understand the roles of cytokines in immune response and reactions. compare the roles of the MHC in the development and expression of immune processes. Describe the structure and functions of the antibodies produced during an immune response.
