Lecture:1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Tutorial:1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Syllabus:Finite difference methods for PDEs - derivative approximation, SOR and ADI methods, explicit and implicit methods. Finite element methods for PDEs - variational statements, finite element formulation of elliptic and time-dependent problems, two-dimensional element calculations, solution of sparce systems of linear equations - (sparse matrix methods and conjugate gradient method), finite element applications.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students are expected to be able to design numerical algorithms and programs for the solutions of parabolic and elliptic boundary value problems using finite difference and finite element techniques; be able to numerically solve various applied mathematical modeling problems governed by partial differential equations, including diffusion process, heat transfer and fluid flows.
