Syllabus:Formation of minerals. Occurrence of economically important minerals. Identification of ores and minerals and their properties. Various ore dressing operations such as comminution, sizing and sorting, jigging, tabling, flotation, magnetic and electrostatic separations. Extraction of mineral species. Various separation processes for beneficiation of minerals, including adsorption, electrolysis, electrowinning, leaching, solvent extraction, precipitation and by reaction. Typical examples from the local mineral processing industry.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to describe ore dressing operations to manage refractory and non-refractory ores and evaluate metal extraction unit operations based on chemical, thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. They will have knowledge to apply hydrometallurgical theory to experimental data to evaluate processes and evaluate basic solvent extraction, ion exchange and leaching circuits.
